Statement Following the Tragic Events in Bondi
It is with a heavy heart that we reflect on the tragic events in Bondi. The shocking loss of life and the profound suffering endured by the victims, their families, and all those affected have deeply touched our nation.
Our chaplain, Fr Anthony Robbie – Parish Priest of St Patrick’s North Bondi and St Anne’s Bondi Beach – has shared distressing accounts of trauma from parishioners and friends who were present during the shootings. Fr Robbie also leads the Order of Malta Community Care Kitchen from the parish, continuing to serve the local community in this time of grief.
We have received many messages of support and prayers from our brothers and sisters around the world. The Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Fra John T. Dunlap, has expressed his deep sadness at the news of the horrific attack in Sydney and strongly condemned the atrocity committed against the Jewish community gathered at Bondi Beach for a Hanukkah celebration. The Grand Priory in England has dedicated a members’ Rosary, and Pope Leo has expressed that he is deeply saddened by the news coming from Australia. In his message, Pope Leo shared his renewed hope that “those tempted to violence will undergo conversion and seek the path of peace.” He offered his prayers for those still recovering, as well as consolation for all who grieve the loss of a loved one. He commended the deceased to God and invoked “the divine blessings of peace and strength upon all Australians.”
We ask that you keep the Jewish community, the Bondi community, and especially the victims and families impacted by this senseless act of violence in your prayers.
The National Rosary to be prayed this Thursday at 8:00 pm AEDT will include a special intention recognising this tragedy. We encourage you, where possible, to join this Rosary so that we may unite spiritually with all who grieve, offering prayer, compassion, and hope in the face of sorrow.
