Creating Leaders Student profile – meet Laura

Laura (pictured with her mother) is currently in Year 11 is one of our new Order of Malta Creating Leaders Scholarship students.
Laura is a hardworking student who has career aspirations to become an engineer. Her favourite subjects at school are Mathematics and Physics. Outside of school her interests include basketball and being involved in Laodato Si – a youth movement program focused on addressing environmental challenges.
 
Laura’s parents are currently experiencing financial difficulty as her mother is battling cancer. As her carer, Laura’s father is limited in his employment options and currently the family’s only source of income is a small kiosk they operate from their home. On average this generates $5 per day.
 
In addition to the running costs of a home, this income most cover the transport expenses for Laura’s three older siblings who studying at UNTL University.
 
The Creating Leaders Scholarship will pay for Laura’s school fees and transportation costs so she can finish her studies at Casait School until she graduates from secondary school in 2026.
 
Laura is one of 10 new students joining the Creating Leaders program in 2025, bringing the total number of students active in the program to 19.

Creating Leaders is an Order of Malta scholarship program in Timor-Leste. The Scholarships support underprivileged children to participate in formal continuing education.

The Creating Leaders scholarship provides not only the payment of school fees, but the cost of uniforms, transport and school lunches.  

Gifts $2 and more are tas deductible for Australian taxpayers.
