Creating Leaders Alumni update – Amália
Creating Leaders is an Order of Malta scholarship program in Timor-Leste that has been running for over 10 years and supports underprivileged children to participate in formal continuing education.
One of our Creating Leaders Alumni, Amália (pictured), is currently in her final year of University and has provided an update on her ambitions after graduating and a message for our supporters.
“My name is Amália, and I was student in the Creating Leaders program from 2016 until 2018. Joining this program brought me immense happiness and proved to be incredibly significant for both me and my family.
When I first joined the program, my family was facing financial difficulties after the passing of my mother and I found myself in a challenging situation. However, the opportunity provided by this program allowed me to continue my secondary education and eventually graduate from Portuguese School of Dili – CELP – Ruy Cinatti.
Upon completing my secondary education, I pursued further studies at the University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) in Dili. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to study at this university as it is affordable and offers a high-quality curriculum. Currently, I am in my final year, eagerly awaiting my graduation, which is scheduled for this year.
I have recently secured a position as a Trainee Lawyer at a law firm. This job will greatly assist me in providing financial support to my family. Additionally, I am also planning to apply for a scholarship from the Camões Institution next year, hoping for success in that endeavour as well.
Lastly, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the support my family has received during these challenging times. Thank you to those who donate to this program.”

In Timor-Leste, 23% of secondary age children in Timor-Leste are not in school and there is a clear income disparity between those who have completed schooling versus those who have not. On average, one more year of education in brings a 10 per cent increase in an individual’s earnings. Each additional year is associated with an 18 per cent higher gross domestic product per capita.
The Creating Leaders scholarships provide not only the payment of school fees, but other assistance and support to help the children overcome barriers that might prevent their participation in education, such as transport, uniforms and meals.
