Gorman House is part of St. Vincent’s Hospital Alcohol and Drug Clinic and shelter to some of Sydney’s most marginalized and problematic population suffering from severe alcohol and drug problems. Many residents are often refused services by other agencies, have multiple addictions and some have histories of violence or self harm. A large number who seek refuge in Gorman House are homeless and as a result of their drug dependencies, are often suffering from deep psychiatric illnesses.
Gorman House provides them with the care and support they need, particularly with physical health intervention, mental health and psychological support. As a non-judgmental residential detoxification unit, Gorman House uses the environment to assist in the withdrawal process. The Management and staff are highly trained health professionals who are experts in drug effects, intoxicaton withdrawal and associated issues and are committed to the physical and emotional needs for so many men and women whose lives are reliant on them. The length of stay is 4 to 5 days, being the clinical period required for detoxification, with Gorman House encouraging residents to find more stable accommodation or a longer-term rehabilitation unit and reclaim responsibility for their lives. Some marvelous lifestyle changes have been achieved for people who have come to Gorman House for help.
Eight years ago Gorman House was forced to reduce operation to only 5 days a week due to lack of funding. However, St Vincent’s Hospital, in partnership with the NSW Branch of the Order of Malta, have succeeded in raising funds to meet this yearly shortfall, enabling Gorman House to operate 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
