Celebrating the 2025 World Day of the Poor at ECM

16/11/2025

The kitchen at Emmanuel City Mission (ECM) in Brisbane was alive with energy early on Sunday morning as members and volunteers came together to prepare a special breakfast in honour of the Pontifical World Day of the Poor. The occasion, established by Pope Francis as a reminder of our shared responsibility toward those in need, has long been a meaningful day for the Northeast Region. This year’s celebration proved especially heartwarming.

A dedicated team of 18 members and volunteers—two joining for the very first time—worked side by side to create a generous and inviting meal. Bacon and egg muffins sizzled on the grill while tables filled with an abundant selection of fresh fruit were carefully arranged. Croissants, bakery treats, and a variety of homemade cakes and slices completed the spread, transforming the ECM dining room into a place of welcome and dignity.

The response from our guests was immediate and uplifting. Many were surprised and delighted by the variety and freshness of the food before them. One guest shared that he had not tasted fresh watermelon or pineapple in years and savoured the chance to enjoy them again. Another guest, curious about the unusually plentiful selection of breakfast items, was visibly moved when the significance of the World Day of the Poor was explained. She expressed deep gratitude, remarking on how touching it was to see people care so sincerely.

For many years, the Northeast Region has faithfully served Our Lords the Poor and the Sick at ECM, with the World Day of the Poor offering a moment of particular reflection and renewal. Seeing such a strong turnout of helping hands this year—familiar faces working alongside first-time volunteers—was both encouraging and inspiring. It served as a reminder that compassion grows when shared, and that small acts of generosity can bring profound moments of connection.

This year’s celebration not only honoured the spirit of the World Day of the Poor but also reaffirmed the region’s collective commitment to hands-on service with love, respect, and joy.
