Order of Malta Hosts Annual Our Lady of Philermos Mass in Melbourne

16/09/2025

This past weekend, the Order of Malta hosted its annual Our Lady of Philermos Mass at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Melbourne, an event deeply rooted in tradition and spiritual significance. The Mass brought together members, volunteers, and friends of the Order of Malta Australia to reflect on both the legacy and the ongoing mission of the Order in the modern world.

A Tradition of Faith and Service

The tradition of honouring Our Lady of Philermos dates back centuries to the time when the Knights of the Order were based on the island of Rhodes. Over the years, devotion to the Virgin Mary as the protector of the Order grew, with the image of Our Lady of Philermos becoming a powerful symbol of both unwavering faith and the Order’s deep commitment to caring for those in need, particularly the sick, the poor, and the marginalised.

A Celebration of Spirituality and Service

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Terry Curtin, Chaplain of the Order of Malta, alongside Fr. Daniel Madigan SJ, Rector of Newman College. The ceremony was further enriched by the musical talents of the Newman College Choir, a string quartet, and the College Organist, creating a deeply moving atmosphere of reverence and community.

Following the Mass, attendees were invited to participate in a ceremony at Newman College, blessing a new garden of the Order of Malta’s Our Lady of Philermos roses, which has been  planted in the forecourt of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. This initiative, a collaboration between the College and the Order of Malta, also features a commemorative plaque with the following inscription:

Our Lady of Philermos Rose
Named after the Patron Saint of the Order of Malta
Feast Day: 8 September

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Philermos, we turn to you in our need. Protect us and guide us as we strive to serve others in your name. May your intercession bring peace to our hearts and strength to our mission. Amen.

A Strong Connection to Newman College

Newman College holds particular significance for the Order of Malta Australia. Many of its members are alumni, and a number of current students are actively involved in the Order’s charitable projects throughout Melbourne. The Our Lady of Philermos Mass thus offered an opportunity to celebrate not only the Order’s rich history but also its ongoing commitment to social justice, healthcare, and humanitarian efforts in the present day.

The Order’s Ongoing Mission

The Mass was a poignant reminder of the Order of Malta’s enduring mission to serve and protect those in need. The community-focused atmosphere highlighted the values of charity, kindness, and service, which remain at the heart of the Order’s work today. As members and supporters gathered in prayer and reflection, they reaffirmed their commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of the homeless, disadvantaged, sick, disabled, and those affected by conflict or natural disasters.
