Cyclone Alfred – Order of Malta responds

As Cyclone Alfred was causing havoc across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, Emmanuel City Mission went into overdrive opening 24 hours a day for 6 days.
At times, well over 100 people sheltered overnight in dry and secure conditions as the tropical storm raged outside. The community rallied to ECM’s aid with donations of food, bedding, mattresses, clothing, and decisively hands-on help.
Members and volunteers from the Order of Malta answered the call providing-
- 40kgs of rice,
- 30 kgs of bacon,
- 24 litres of ice cream,
- 15 kgs of margarine
- 10 kgs of onions
- 2 large legs of ham
Members also assisted in overnight supervision on several nights and supplying the team cooking lunch for several hundred on Sunday. This demonstration of service to Our Lords the Poor and the Sick was performed with great joy and respect.
The Order of Malta salutes the Emmanuel Community for being so adaptive to the needs of those who could not fend for themselves in unbearable circumstances and thanks you for the opportunity to be of service.
The Order of Malta aims to assist in times of crisis, including refugee support and emergency relief to those impacted by disaster or conflict.
