Community Care in Action: A Shared Mission in Sydney

25/03/2026

Last week, Prof Mark Compton AM GCStJ, Lord Prior of The Most Venerable Order of St John, joined members of the Order of Malta during their regular Monday night Community Care Van outreach in the Sydney CBD.

It was a humid evening following a week of heavy rain, and the impact on those sleeping rough was evident. Water and dry socks were in particularly high demand as the outreach team encountered approximately 50 people throughout the service. This week’s route focused on Central Station and Belmore Park, areas where many experiencing homelessness seek shelter.

Many of those met were long-term rough sleepers who recognise the volunteers by their red tabards. Over time, these regular interactions have helped build strong relationships, with volunteers developing a deeper understanding of individual circumstances and how best to provide support. This familiarity fosters trust and makes each visit more meaningful.

The recent weather has compounded an already difficult situation. In Belmore Park, one group had constructed a small trench system to divert rainwater away from their sleeping area—a simple yet striking example of resilience and resourcefulness in the face of challenging conditions.

While practical items such as food, water, and clothing are essential, the human connection remains just as important. There is a sense of continuity in these visits, with volunteers and regular guests often falling into easy, familiar conversations. These moments of connection—sharing stories, interests, and simple companionship—are often as valuable as the material assistance provided.

The Order of St John and the Order of Malta share a common heritage rooted in the 11th-century Knights Hospitaller, united by a mission to care for the sick and the poor. Today, both Orders—alongside other members of the Alliance of the Orders of St John—continue this legacy through humanitarian, medical, and social outreach initiatives around the world.

Through partnerships, shared service, and a commitment to dignity and compassion, this mission remains as relevant today as it was nearly a millennium ago.
