Over 120 people attend annual Coats for the Homeless fundraising breakfast in Brisbane

18/04/2018

Report by Derek Pingel

This year’s Queensland Coats for the Homeless fundraising breakfast held at the Brisbane Club on 9 March was again a tremendous success with just over 120 attendees.

Members and guests of the Order of Malta, Brisbane’s Archbishop Mark Coleridge and his Auxillary Bishop Ken Howell, Members of the Order of Saint Lazarus, Members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, together with many dignitaries and their guests came together to once again show support for those homeless within the Queensland region. A significant amount of money was raised which will assist in ensuring adequate funds for this year’s Queensland commitment to distribute 1500 coats.

The Honourable Margaret White AO, this year’s guest speaker, provided a sobering insight as a result of her commission in 2016/2017 leading the Royal Commission into the protection and detention of children in the Northern Territory. Her findings and subsequent insights highlighted the need for much more work to be done in this area to protect and support the youth throughout the Territory and broader community. Justice Martin Daubney in his role as MC kept everyone entertained and the mood light hearted and thoroughly enjoyable.

This annual breakfast has become one of Queensland’s primary fundraising initiatives which brings together a tremendous group of like-minded people all with a goal to assist those homeless and less fortunate in our community. Much thanks on behalf of the Order must go to each and every person attending the breakfast who generously contributed to this important work.
