‘Moments Matter’ – 2025 Loneliness Awareness Week

08/08/2025

It is Loneliness Awareness Week and the 2025 theme is ‘Moments Matter’.

Whilst this year’s theme is shaped around young people aged 16 – 25, our Master of Social Work students on placement with the Order of Malta and ACU Community Hub came up with the idea to offer bacon and egg rolls to residents who visit the Mobile Community Café at Agg St. They positioned themselves outside of the community room where the Café operates, which gave them the opportunity to interact with residents who do not currently attend the morning tea program.

The initiative was well received by the community!

The Order of Malta and ACU Mobile Community Café

The Mobile Community Café visits public housing estates that are home to senior residents (aged 55+). Many live on their own and experience, to varying degrees, loneliness and isolation.

The weekly visits provide an opportunity for participants to seek assistance/support from our volunteers, who can also connect them with community services if necessary. It is also an opportunity for residents to chat, share a cup of coffee and a snack.

Our volunteers facilitate the sessions, provide the snacks, companionship and support services to those who attend.

“Loneliness isn’t just about being alone, it’s about feeling unseen. This week, we flipped the narrative with egg & bacon rolls, shared stories, and a BBQ that says: you belong here.”
