Mexico: Emergency relief after twin storms
Distribution of relief items and free health care through mobile clinics
Recovery efforts are underway after Mexico was hit by two different hurricanes in the same week: Hurricane Ingrid, which formed on 12 September in the Gulf Coast, and the even more destructive Hurricane Manuel, which started sweeping over the country’s Pacific coast a day later. Combined, the two storms left over a hundred dead and damaged or destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes.
Malteser International, the International relief agency of the Order of Malta, is supporting the Mexican Association of the Order of Malta in providing emergency relief in the state of Guerrero, one of the most affected by the storms. In the first phase of the relief activities, the organization organized the collection, purchase and storage of relief items such as food, medicines, clothing, water and hygiene items. In the second phase, the association is sending mobile medical teams to the disaster region, providing free health care and distributing relief items to the population. The activities will benefit 1,000 people directly as well as their families.
Malteser International has already been supporting the Mexican association in the areas of health care and disaster relief since 2005. Currently, the project “Save a child from AIDS” provides psychological, medical and social support for 32 mothers and their families, offering job training, counselling against depression and discrimination, nutritional and financial support for the care of infants.
