During the 2026 Lourdes Pilgrimage, a significant spiritual milestone was reached for several members of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Three members of the Australian Association, together with a Dame from Singapore, made the Promise of Obedience, while another Australian Dame made her Definitive Promise.

The Promise of Obedience represents a deepening of commitment within the life of the Order. It is a conscious decision to more fully embrace the spiritual dimension of membership—seeking to live in closer alignment with the teachings of the Church and the mission of the Order. Central to this promise is a dedication to serving the sick and the most vulnerable with humility, compassion, and generosity.

Unlike the vows taken by professed religious, the Promise of Obedience is lived within the context of everyday life. Members continue their professional and family responsibilities while integrating faith, service, and a spirit of dedication more intentionally into all that they do.

The Definitive Promise marks a further step in this journey, signifying a lasting and mature commitment to this way of life within the Order.

Congratulations to these members on taking this significant step in their spiritual journey with the Order of Malta. Celebrated in the sacred and inspiring setting of Lourdes, this occasion marks a truly special moment of faith and commitment.
