Tonight, Someone Will Sleep in the Cold — You Can Change That

13/05/2026

As winter approaches, thousands of Australians are facing the harsh reality of homelessness without warmth, shelter, or support.

For more than 15 years, the Order of Malta Australia’s Coats for the Homeless campaign has provided warmth, dignity, and hope to people sleeping rough across the country. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, more than 50,000 specially designed coats have been distributed nationwide since the initiative began.

But this year is different.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact vulnerable Australians, the demand for support has increased dramatically. At the very moment more people are turning to us for help, declining donations have forced us to reduce coat production.

Right now, as many as 1 in 200 Australians are experiencing homelessness. Every day, people seeking emergency accommodation are turned away because there are simply not enough beds available. Many are left exposed to cold nights, rain, illness, and isolation.

For some, homelessness is temporary. For others, it becomes a long-term reality.

Whatever their circumstances, Order of Malta volunteers are there — offering compassion, human connection, and practical support through warm coats, hygiene packs, and essential care items.

A Coat Can Make a Life-Changing Difference

Our coats are not ordinary jackets. They have been specially designed in consultation with people experiencing homelessness to meet the realities of life on the streets. They are:

  • Warm and shower-proof
  • Durable and practical
  • Easy to carry and wear
  • Designed to provide comfort and protection during harsh winter conditions

A donation of $100 can provide three warm coats to people sleeping rough this winter.

But the greatest impact comes through regular giving.

Become a Regular Supporter

Monthly donations help ensure we can continue responding quickly and consistently to growing demand.

Regular support allows us to:

  • Maintain a steady supply of coats throughout winter
  • Provide hygiene packs and socks to those most at risk
  • Plan ahead and reach more people in need
  • Respond when homeless services and communities ask for urgent assistance

The demand is already overwhelming. We regularly receive requests from homeless organisations and individuals asking for coats and supplies. The only thing limiting our reach is funding.

Your generosity can provide warmth, comfort, dignity, and hope to people facing homelessness this winter.

Donate Today

Whether you choose to make a one-off donation or become a regular supporter, every contribution makes an immediate and meaningful difference.

Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible for Australian taxpayers. Donate before 30 June 2026 to claim your deduction this financial year.

A monthly gift could provide:

  • $30 per month — a steady supply of warm coats across winter
  • $50 per month — coats plus essential care packs for vulnerable people

A one off donation of $100 could buy three warm coats to people sleeping rough this winter.
