Timor-Leste Papal Visit – help the Order of Malta provide medical support
The Holy Father will arrive in Timor-Leste today and will remain in the country until Wednesday.
This highly anticipated visit is seen as a historic moment for the nation. The first pope to visit Timor-Leste was St. Pope John Paul II in 1989, when it was still under Indonesian occupation. Pope Francis’ visit will be to an independent Timor-Leste, and with a Catholic population of 98%, it promises to be a highly celebrated affair.
Due to the anticipated crowds at the public Mass, the Order of Malta Medical Clinic and ambulances have been asked to provide support and medical assistance. This is fantastic recognition of the services our clinic provides.
The Order of Malta Medical Clinic in Dili offers free basic primary out of hospital medical care and health education to financially disadvantaged Timorese. It also provides an outreach service, ensuring remote villages can benefit from medical care and advice. Each year these services benefit thousands of Timorese.
The clinic has been supported thanks to the generous contributions in time and money by a small number of members and donors. As the clinic renews for the long term, we welcome greater interest and support from our membership and network and ask that you please consider a donation to support the work of the clinic .
We are pleased to also announce that the Clinic welcomes the involvement of the Order’s international relief agency, Malteser International, who visited the clinic earlier in the year and has agreed to partner with the Australian Association to support the clinic’s vital activities and modernise the governance framework from 2025. A dedicated working group made up of MI, Executive Council and Members of the Order has been formed to deliver the agreed outcomes in the coming months. Our President shall visit the clinic later in September and we look forward to sharing further updates on this, as they happen.
The clinic operates on a running cost of US$10,000 a month and is funded entirely by donations.
Please consider a tax deductible donation to support this project.
