From Sydney to Rockhampton: Bishop Danny Meagher Begins New Ministry
Today, seven members and one candidate of the Australian Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta travelled to Central Queensland to attend the installation of Bishop Danny Meagher as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton at St Joseph’s Cathedral.
The installation Mass brought together clergy, religious, civic leaders, parishioners, and representatives of Catholic organisations to witness this significant moment in the life of the Diocese.
Prior to his appointment by Pope Leo XIV, Bishop Danny served as an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Sydney. He has also been a very active Conventual Chaplain ad honorem of the Order of Malta.
His role as a chaplain with a Hospitaller Order was a natural fit. During 2021, Bishop Danny spent six months working closely with the homeless and marginalised in inner Sydney. He celebrated Mass weekly at the Matthew Talbot Hostel and volunteered with the homeless at David’s Place, as well as through support services provided by the Order of Malta.
Reflecting on this ministry, Bishop Danny said:
“I got to know a lot of people living in the housing commission areas. I am attracted to that because I find that by being close to people on the margins, I come much closer to God.”
Members of the Order of Malta in Sydney have expressed both sadness at his departure and gratitude for his pastoral care, friendship, and spiritual leadership over many years. At the same time, they know he will receive a warm welcome from the Knights and Dames of Queensland as he begins his new ministry in Rockhampton.
Members of the Order of Malta attended the celebration to show support for this much-loved and valued chaplain and to offer their prayers and ongoing support as he commences his episcopal ministry in Central Queensland.
