Donated Toys and Books Bring Comfort to Families at Gold Coast University Hospital
22/05/2026
Recently, Order of Malta Regional Hospitaller Danny Higgins presented a selection of donated children’s toys and books to Michelle Philp, Coordinator of the Spiritual Care Department at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH).
The donated items formed part of the many generous contributions of clothing and household goods received through Philermos House in Southport. Following discussions with GCUH regarding the need for children’s activities and resources to support families during extended stays in the palliative care wards, it became an ideal opportunity to redirect these items to a meaningful and much-needed purpose.
Philermos House, affectionately known as “The Big Red Shed”, opening in June 2026, is an adults-focused support facility (18+ years). Children’s items are threfore not required at the service and this initiative ensured the donations could continue to provide comfort, care and support to families facing challenging circumstances.
The Order of Malta Southport Care extends its sincere appreciation to BNI Beachside for its ongoing generosity and regular contributions of donated goods. Partnerships and community support such as this continue to make a positive difference in the lives of many across the Gold Coast community.
This collaboration reflects the Order of Malta’s continuing commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the community through practical assistance, compassion and service.
