Philermos House Set to Open Its Doors in Southport
A new chapter of community support is about to begin on the Gold Coast, with Philermos House preparing to open its doors in Southport in the coming weeks.
Developed by the Order of Malta, Philermos House will provide practical assistance, connection, and dignity to people experiencing hardship and homelessness, offering a welcoming environment where individuals can access essential services and support.
The facility has been established to address a growing need within the community and will provide a range of services, including meals, shower facilities, laundry services, clothing distribution, and safe spaces where people can connect with others and access assistance.
Danny Higgins, Regional Hospitaller for the Order of Malta and the driving force behind the project, said Philermos House represents a significant step forward in supporting vulnerable members of the community through compassionate, community-based care.
“Philermos House is about creating a place where people feel welcome, respected, and supported,” Danny said. “Every person who walks through our doors deserves dignity and the opportunity to access practical help when they need it most.”
While the opening of the facility marks an exciting milestone, Danny emphasised that the long-term success of Philermos House will depend heavily on the support of volunteers.
“Services like Philermos House simply cannot operate without the support of volunteers,” he said. “The contribution of community members who are willing to give their time, skills, and compassion is invaluable. Volunteers will be at the heart of everything we do, helping us create a warm, welcoming environment for those who need it.”
As preparations continue ahead of the official opening, community members are being encouraged to register their interest in volunteering. Whether assisting with hospitality services, administration, outreach activities, or simply offering a friendly face, volunteers will play a vital role in helping the service thrive.
In addition to volunteer support, Philermos House is seeking financial contributions from individuals, businesses, and community organisations. All donations are tax deductible and will directly support the ongoing operation of the facility, ensuring services remain available to those who need them most.
Monthly pledge donations are particularly encouraged, providing a reliable source of income that supports the long-term sustainability of the service and its programs.
“Regular monthly donations allow us to plan for the future and continue delivering services with confidence,” Danny said. “Even a small monthly contribution can have a significant impact when combined with the generosity of others across our community.”
As opening day draws closer, Philermos House is inviting the wider community to become part of this important initiative. Whether through volunteering, donating, or helping spread the word, every contribution will help create a place of hope, dignity, and support for those facing difficult circumstances.
