Members and volunteers support Confirmation Day for the Emmanuel Community

28/08/2022

Sunday 28th August was Confirmation Day for the Emmanuel Community in South Brisbane. Members and Volunteers from the Order of Malta had the honour of not only supporting ECM and their guests from the streets but also Bishop Ken Howell, Conventional Chaplain ad Honorem who celebrated Mass as Auxillary Bishop of Brisbane.

With a bigger crowd than usual and many of the regular Order team not able to attend it was inspiring to have new volunteers and members from other teams answer the call for assistance to provide breakfast, lunch and support to the guests of ECM. Special thanks to volunteers Michael and Pat who became connected to the Order of Malta from last year’s Camp for Disabled Youth on the Gold Coast for cooking up the largest sausage and onion spread seen by all there.

Besides the meals provided, we could assist one guest who had just had all his teeth removed and needed a supply of soft foods as he had not eaten for a few days. One guest recognised the Order’s emblem had a medical connection and spoke about his difficulties in life and how each day is a new battle with his circumstances, but expressed hope in taking on this challenge.

Support for ECM and their ministry to the disadvantaged in Brisbane is a real and vibrant way Members and Volunteers are assisting Our Lords the Poor and the Sick in a hands-on and effective way.
