Many Candles, One Light: Bringing Hope to Adelaide’s Homeless This Christmas

11/12/2025

In November 2025, Malteser International (MI) reminded us of a sobering truth: we live in a world overshadowed by darkness. Conflict, displacement, climate‑related disasters, and poverty weigh heavily on millions. Yet even the smallest act of compassion has the power to pierce that darkness with light.

Through its Many Candles, One Light campaign, MI calls us to remember that every prayer, every word of kindness, every act of generosity is a candle lit against despair. And when these candles burn together, they form a powerful global flame of hope and love—reflecting the unconditional love of the Christ Child born for us on Christmas Day.

Inspired by this message, members of the Order of Malta in South Australia joyfully undertook its 2025 Christmas care pack distribution. Throughout November and December, volunteers assembled and delivered more than 80 care and food packs to people experiencing homelessness in Adelaide.

The care packs, funded and provided by the National Order of Malta in Australia, contained humble yet valued necessities—soap, toothpaste, wipes, shampoo, and socks—items that resonate dignity and wellbeing. Alongside these essentials were Christmas food treats generously donated members and friends of the Order in the region during the annual Christmas Lunch in November.

Members of the Order and volunteers spent time with the homeless of Adelaide, listening and sharing life stories, sharing moments of laughter and companionship. For the first time, one volunteer stood alongside the homeless holding a candle in support of Malteser International’s global initiative—a symbol of light for the sick and the poor across the world.

Not everyone was able to receive a package directly. Some were asleep, while others were too affected by drugs or alcohol to engage. Yet they, too, were not forgotten. For those resting, a package was placed quietly beside them, accompanied by a silent prayer—a simple act of dignity and respect. In this way, the Order of Malta ensured that every individual, regardless of circumstance, felt the presence of Christ’s care and compassion during the Christmas season. This Christmas, members and friends of the Order in SA were reminded by the homeless they were blessed to encounter, that even a single candle can dispel the deepest darkness. Together, every act of kindness becomes one light, shining with hope and compassion for a just and just and compassionate world Christ intended.
