The Order of Malta Australia is pleased to announce an exciting development in its efforts to strengthen healthcare services at the Order of Malta Clinic in Dili. Following a recent visit to the clinic and updates on plans to acquire a new X-ray machine and establish an onsite diagnostic laboratory, a generous commitment has been made by the Order of Malta New Zealand.

Between now and 31 December 2025, all donations made towards the purchase of the new X-ray machine will be dollar-matched by the Order of Malta New Zealand, doubling the impact of every contribution.

This matching opportunity will significantly accelerate progress towards the fundraising target of AU$135,000.

Why X-Ray Services Are Critically Needed

• Improved diagnosis across a wide range of conditions

The addition of X-ray imaging will greatly enhance the clinic’s ability to diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses, including broken bones and diseases affecting the heart, lungs, bones, and blood vessels.
As tuberculosis remains a significant health challenge in Timor-Leste, particularly among vulnerable populations, chest X-rays are vital for early detection and intervention.

• Reducing barriers to care

Currently, patients in need of X-rays must travel to the National Hospital. Located in one of Dili’s poorest areas, many of the clinic’s patients arrive on foot, making the journey to the hospital difficult, impractical, or unaffordable.

• Faster diagnosis and treatment

Having X-ray services available onsite will enable quicker assessments and earlier treatment, leading to substantially improved long-term health outcomes for patients.
