Order of Malta Australia

Australia is phasing out cheques

The Australian government has announced that cheque payments will be phased out by September 30, 2029. This change will affect all personal, business and bank cheques, preventing them from being written and deposited.

This has been driven by the decline in cheque usage over the last ten years, as Australians increasingly adopt digital payment methods.

You still have time.

The government’s Cheques Transition Plan outlines a staged process to wind down the cheque system, aiming for a smooth transition.

Key dates are:

  • Cheque issuance will end on 30 June 2028
  • Cheque acceptance will end on 30 September 2029
