World Day of the Poor 2022: Order of Malta serve vulnerable in Brisbane through ECM

13/11/2022

For World Day of the Poor 13 November 2022, our Order of Malta Volunteers (OMV) arrived early Sunday morning at the Emmanuel City Mission (ECM) homeless sanctuary. We were immediately greeted by over 10 people waiting outside for the centre to open. So we happily went to work preparing the free breakfast of toast, cereal. tea and coffee, and delicious donuts and muffins, donated by the Order of Malta members. Over 50 people in need were served over the course of 5 hours. Including a free sausage sizzle BBQ lunch provided to hungry and thankful arrivals, who were happy to chat. Attendees were also grateful for over 20 donated books on faith, film and personal growth, to help build the ECM library. Caroline, an OMV team leader, reflected on the 2022 theme of For your sakes Christ became poor (cf. 2 Cor 8:9). “The resilience of the human spirit is a true sign of God’s touch and solidarity in our lives. We see in the people’s smiles how Christ inspires strength and hope through unwavering love”.
