New homeless food service in Palmerston, NT
On Saturday 7 October, Order of Malta members and volunteers in the Northern Territory prepared and distributed 70 meals to the homeless in Palmerston.
The food parcels, prepared, packed and distributed by our members and volunteers consist of a cooked meal, salad, fruit, buttered bread, a sweet and a bottle of water. The program aims to deliver a nutritious meal to homeless people living rough.
This was the first distribution in Palmerston, which has a high homeless population and limited food services.
Our outreach volunteers also rendered some first aid assistance to a homeless female who had an infected lesion to her leg. We assisted her in disinfecting and dressing the wound and advised her to attend the emergency room at either the Palmerston or Royal Darwin hospitals for more comprehensive treatment.
This activity is undertaken in collaboration with St Vincent de Paul, who advertise our food distribution service from their Vinnies store. Meals are also distributed from there, alongside our volunteer outreach team who deliver meals directly to rough sleepers.
