Meet Natalino: our latest child to be sponsored in the Creating Leaders Scholarship Program
Creating Leaders is an Order of Malta scholarship program in Timor-Leste. Like many developing countries, Timor-Leste has high levels of poverty and low national human development. Education is an important vehicle to employment, independence, social and political empowerment and consequently, national development. However, a cycle of poverty often creates barriers to the children’s participation in education.
The Scholarship supports underprivileged children to participate in formal continuing education.
Thanks to a generous donor, another child has been sponsored through the Creating Leaders Scholarship program.
Natalino is one of our youngest students and in December will be celebrating his ninth birthday. He lives in Bebonuk with his mother who is a housekeeper/gardener, father who works as a fisherman and two siblings. He is studying at Externato São Jose and his favorite subject is Portuguese (he speaks Tetum at home) and his hobbies include badminton. When he is older he hopes to become a teacher.
Natalino enjoys gathering with the other students and is very excited about the opening of the Gerard Centre, a building within the Embassy compound where we are establishing a resource center for the students. He would like it to have a library and resources he can use for study.
Thank you to Natalino’s sponsor!
Sponsoring a Child in the Creating Leaders Scholarship Program costs $70 a month.
